How to Clean Like a Professional Before Moving Into Your New Home
The detailed, step-by-step way to start fresh — properly
Moving into a new home in Cheshire should feel like a fresh start. But whether you’re relocating to Wilmslow, Alderley Edge or Knutsford, many homes — even high-end ones — aren’t cleaned to the standard you’d expect. In luxury homes and busy households alike, it’s the overlooked details that shape how a space feels. A proper, professional-level clean before you move in changes everything — creating a calm, polished environment from the very beginning.
The reality?
Even homes that “look clean” often aren’t cleaned to the level you’d expect — especially in the details.
Right now, as I’m in the middle of moving myself, I’m following the exact same process we use for our clients — and it’s made the whole experience feel calmer, more in control, and far less overwhelming.
This is how to do it properly.
Start With a Simple Plan
Before you start cleaning, give yourself structure.
A basic professional approach:
1. Walk the property while it’s empty
Notice build-up areas (kitchen, bathrooms, windows, Skirting boards, Where furniture used to be)
2. Split into zones
- Kitchen
- Bathrooms
- Bedrooms
- Living areas
- Play areas
- Mud rooms
- Hallways & stairs
3. Prioritise in this order:
- Heavy jobs first (grease, limescale, built-up dirt)
- Then general cleaning
- Then finishing touches
4. Gather your products before starting
This avoids stopping halfway through.

Products We Actually Use (Simple but Effective)
You don’t need 20 products — just the right ones:
- Degreaser (for kitchens, tiles & splash backs, cupboards, extractor fans)
- Limescale remover (bathrooms, taps, showers)
- Multi-surface cleaner (daily surfaces)
- Glass cleaner (windows, mirrors)
- Cream cleaner (sinks, tougher marks)
- Microfibre cloths (colour-coded if possible)
- Soft brush/toothbrush (for edges and corners)
Optional but powerful:
- Steam cleaner (for deep sanitation)
- White vinegar + warm water (natural descaler)

Start With the Hardest Jobs First
This is exactly what I’m doing right now.
Kitchen – Always takes the longest
Grease builds up invisibly — especially on:
- Cupboard doors
- Handles
- Extractor fans
- Tiles and splashbacks
How to remove it properly:
- Use a degreaser or warm water + washing up liquid
- Let it sit for a minute before wiping
- Use a microfibre cloth – soft brush for the handles
- Repeat if needed — don’t rush it
Bathrooms
Limescale is what makes a bathroom feel “not quite clean” & stops that new feel shine.
Focus on:
- Taps
- Shower screens
- Tiles
- Around plugholes
- sliding shower door groves
How to remove it:
- Apply limescale remover or white vinegar
- Leave it to sit (this is key)
- Wipe with a soft cloth or non-scratch pad or toothbrush
- Buff dry for a polished finish
Don’t Skip What Most People Forget
This is where the real difference is made.
Inside Window Frames & Tracks
These collect:
- Dust
- Dead insects
- Black mould spots
How to clean:
- Vacuum first
- Use a toothbrush or small brush
- Spray cleaner and wipe thoroughly
Skirting Boards, Door Frames & Switches
These are the first things people subconsciously notice.
- Wipe with warm soapy water or multi-surface cleaner
- Dry after to avoid streaks
- Pay attention to edges and corners
Work Top to Bottom, Room by Room
Professional rule:
- High areas first (tops of cupboards, shelves)
- Then surfaces
- Floors last
Finish one room completely before moving on — it keeps everything consistent and stops overwhelm.
Make the Home Feel Fresh (Not Just Clean)
Cleaning is one thing — feeling fresh is another.
Simple things I’m doing right now:
- Open windows while cleaning (even for short periods)
- Let fresh air move through the space
- Wipe down radiators and vents
- Empty bins immediately
- Finish with a light, clean scent (not overpowering)
Fresh air alone makes a huge difference.
Take Breaks (This Is More Important Than You Think)
It’s very easy to push through and try to do everything at once.
But from experience — the stress doesn’t hit during the clean…
it hits after, when your body catches up.
So:
- Take regular breaks
- Stay hydrated
- Spread the clean over a couple of days if you can
This is exactly what I’m doing — and it’s made the whole move feel far more manageable.

Final Thought
A clean home isn’t just about appearance.
It’s about how it feels when you walk in.
And when it’s done properly from the start —
everything that comes after feels easier.
