How I Keep My Home Clean While Running a Business and Living with ME/CFS

Running a small cleaning business while managing ME/CFS means I’ve had to rethink how I approach cleaning my own home. I know what it’s like to juggle work, health, and a busy life—and I want to share what’s worked for me in a way that’s kind, realistic, and sustainable.

Here’s how I keep on top of things without pushing myself too far:

1. Clean As You Go

Instead of saving everything for “cleaning day,” I tidy as I move through the house. Wipe the counters after making tea. Rinse plates straight after eating. Little habits like these make a big difference.

2. Always Crack a Window

Even in winter, I like to keep a window slightly open. Fresh air stops smells lingering, reduces condensation & mould, and actually helps stop dust from settling. It’s such an easy win.

3. One Room at a Time

On days when I have energy, I choose one room. No pressure to do the whole house. Just one space I can finish and feel good about. It’s manageable and it builds momentum.

4. Tidy = Clean (Mostly)

If you keep on top of general tidying, your house feels clean—even if it’s not deep cleaned. Clear surfaces and a quick fluff of the cushions go a long way. Most visitors won’t notice the dust, but they will feel the calm.

Some Extra Tips I Swear By:

5. Keep a ‘Grab & Go’ Cleaning Kit
I keep a small caddy with just the essentials—multi-surface spray, cloth, and duster—so I can clean quickly without hauling everything around. It saves time and energy.

6. Dust with Dryer Sheets (Even Used Ones)
Used dryer sheets are brilliant for skirting boards, blinds, and radiators. They reduce static so less dust clings afterwards—plus, they smell nice!

7. Time Anchors > Schedules
Strict cleaning schedules don’t work for me. Instead, I tie quick jobs to daily habits:
• Waiting for the kettle? Wipe the counters.
• Brushed my teeth? Tidy the bathroom shelf.
• Dinner’s cooking? Clear the table.
These “anchors” fit into life without needing a big plan.

8. Microcleaning Moments
One shelf. One sink. One drawer. Don’t underestimate what 30 seconds here and there can do. It all adds up over time and helps prevent overwhelm.

9. Add a Fresh Scent
I use a natural room spray or a few drops of essential oil on a cloth when I’ve tidied a space. It tricks my brain into seeing the room as cleaner, even if I didn’t scrub every inch.

And a Final Reminder…

If you’re like me and instantly spot every speck of dirt the second you walk into a room—remember this: most people don’t see it. In fact, even when I think my house is overdue a deep clean, people often tell me how spotless it looks.

So be kind to yourself. If you’re following the tips above and doing what you can, then your home is absolutely fine. Everyone’s house gets messy. No one’s space is perfectly clean all the time.

You’re doing great ❤️
